Project Insomnia

Project Insomnia is many things, but in this context it is simply a "braindump" of whatever I happen to be thinking/reading/watching/doing at the moment. Parental guidance suggested.

Your San Jose-Silicon Valley A's of Fremont!

What will the crowd chant when the A's move? "Let's go Free-mont" just doesn't have the same ring. Jennifer thinks they'll take the Mets route with "Let's go A's" but I don't like it; the "A" trails off softly and doesn't have the staccato beat of "Let's go Mets", plus you lose the syncopated clapping.

Percentages

Going in to the all-hands this afternoon, I'd estimated these possibilities:

Going public: less than 1%
Being acquired: 10%
Got funding: 40%
Nothing particularly helpful: 50%

(does not equal 100% due to rounding)

It wasn't the 50% and it wasn't the less than 1%. Apparently I'm not allowed to say anything else.

When "Don't Stop" should just be "Stop"

So I haven't ever watched The Sopranos, I don't have HBO and really wasn't interested. But like everyone else, I saw the last minute of the last episode repeated over and over and it made me remember how much I liked Journey.

What.

Quiet, you.

Anyway, so I figured, hmm, I wonder if they're still around. Could be fun to go see them live. The Google pointed me to JourneyMusic.com (warning: Flash, audio) and I poked around there for a few minutes before realizing that Steve Perry is no longer with Journey, and in fact hasn't been since 1997 (though I was kind of surprised to read that they were a going concern in '97). Since then they've gone through a couple of lead singers and are touring with Def Leppard.

Guys. I think it's time to shut it down. Really. When the singer who made your songs memorable is no longer singing them, that kind of removes the reason for the rest of the band to go on.

A Clue: NO

If you are a pharmacy technician--the person who fills prescriptions, enters insurance information into the record and deals with customers picking up their meds--and you don't know how to fill prescriptions, bill insurance or work the cash register, should you be a pharmacy technician? A Clue: NO.

If you are a shipping specialist at FedEx-Kinko's--the person who accepts packages from customers, weighs them and enters the shipment information into the FedEx system and then applies the FedEx stickers to the packages--and you don't know how to accept packages, weigh packages, enter shipment information or even properly apply stickers, should you be a shipping specialist? A Clue: NO.

If you work at Subway, for dog's sake, and you don't know how to make a turkey breast sandwich with cheese (NOT TOASTED! Why do you always want to toast the sandwich?) and no tomato, should you really be working at Subway? A Clue: NO!

What is DRM and why you should care

This essay entitled "Why DRM won't ever work" by Google engineer Jeremy Allison explains what DRM (Digital Rights Management) is and why you should care in plain English. If you use a computer, buy CDs or DVDs, listen to your iPod or other music player, or want to be involved at all in today's digital society you should read this.
Trying to make Digital Rights Management (DRM) work in the real world is like asking engineers to do 'Star Trek' style magic, rather than real engineering. DRM simply cannot work. For less technical readers who might be wondering what I'm going on about, DRM is the attempt to control copying on a digital file, or sometimes even to add a restriction on how many times such a file can be copied. It's usually applied to online music or movies, but it's never sold to the consumer for what it actually is, an added restriction on what can be done with something they've paid for. DRM is always explained as the 'wonderful new technology that will help protect your medical records from thieves.' The truth is, it can't even do that.

I have a new review of Junnoon Restaurant in Palo Alto from last Saturday night. We ate there with Alex and Lani after seeing The African Queen at the Stanford Theatre.

Safari on Windows

Apple releases Windows version of Safari:
Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs said the Cupertino technology company will challenge Microsoft Corp. on the Internet by introducing a version of its Safari browser that will work on computers running Windows.
...
'We think Windows users are going to be really impressed when they see how fast and intuitive web browsing can be with Safari,' said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. 'Hundreds of millions of Windows users already use iTunes, and we look forward to turning them on to Safari's superior browsing experience too.'
The download is at apple.com/safari. I'm trying it out right now.

Elephant Bar, Emeryville (not the usual review)

Name: Elephant Bar
Address: 5601 Bay Street, Emeryville, CA 94608
Phone: (510) 601-1001
Web site: ElephantBar.com
Date & Time visited: Sunday, June 3, 2007, 8:00 PM
Guests: Jennifer and me
What we had: Spicy Barbecue Combo (ribs, shrimp, chicken) (Jen), Shrimp and Chicken FirePot (me).

What's this? Shouldn't this post be over on Project Insomnia Restaurant Reviews? Well yes, except that the meal was interrupted halfway through by a bomb scare! I have no idea whether it was legitimate or what, but our server came up to us and said they'd received three threatening phone calls and we had to leave. The restaurant was emptying out slowly, and as we left we saw several parties still at their tables. So I really don't know what the hell was going on.

Our dishes were really good, as much as we were able to enjoy before we had to leave.

Service: Average. Iced tea refills when needed, but sans ice so it was lukewarm.

Would we go back: Probably not to this location, because we were only there to visit the nearby IKEA store to get a pair of BORGHAMN height extender units--we use them as shallow bookcases--that were not available at the East Palo Alto store. However, there's another location near SFO that we've enjoyed and has a great view of the planes landing.

About this so-called bomb scare, I still have no idea what was really going on, but we didn't have to pay for our dinner so we sort of came out ahead.

Mars vs. Venus

I really don't buy the "Mars vs. Venus" thing, but it's good shorthand to describe this:
Jen: What's this?
Me: It's the spare remote for the satellite receiver we're not using.

Man shoves 10-year-old to the ground, snatches puppy from his arms

Man shoves 10-year-old to the ground, snatches puppy from his arms:
There are thieves and then there are thieves who steal puppies from children.

A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of a man who shoved a 10-year-old Vacaville boy to the ground, snatched his favorite puppy and jumped into a getaway car as the distraught boy screamed for his pet.

'I think it is horrible,' said Vacaville police Sgt. Denise Quatman, who on Friday made a plea to the public to help investigators find the pet-napper and return the little dog to its owner. 'It's not something that we've encountered before.'
I have nothing to say, except... what the hell?

You... belong in the zoo... the San Francisco Zoo

Orphaned bears' new lair / Amenities include big pool, climbing structure, garden, windows for public perusal:
Kiona caught a carp. Kachina chased a peacock. On Thursday morning, the grizzly bear twins at the San Francisco Zoo were just getting to know their new habitat, but they were already making themselves at home.

In a quintessential rags-to-riches tale that's a cross between Charles Dickens and Donald Trump, the orphaned sisters who were hours away from a Montana execution in fall 2004 are moving into a $3.7 million enclave that opens on June 14 -- Flag Day. Not coincidentally, the grizzly can be found on the California flag.

'Our other bears are going to be very sad to see the grizzlies move into such nice digs,' said Manuel Mollinedo, the zoo's executive director.
I think we may need to plan a Zoo visit in the near future. We've been there a few times since moving to the Bay Area in 2000--the best visit was on a rainy November Sunday, and the Zoo was almost deserted but the animals were all out enjoying the shower.
