Following up on this post, I downloaded and installed Pidgin and tried it out. It works acceptably, but there aren’t any compelling reasons to switch away from Trillian Pro and there is one major (for me) missing feature: the buddy list can be docked, but it can’t auto-hide; this is a feature of Trillian Pro that is invaluable to me on a small laptop screen.
